How to Crystallize Havaianas Flip Flops

Swarovski flipflop Kit

What you will need:

1. Swarovski flatback rhinestones NON-HOTFIX: size ss16 (4mm) or ss20 (5mm) for this tutorial I have used ss16 rhinestones on UK size 6/7 Havaianas. View Swarovski rhinestones

2. Jewel setter: This is a plastic wand with a wax bud one side and pointed end the other, it makes picking up rhinestones very simple. View Jewel setter

3. Sand Paper / Emery board: You will either require a small piece of medium grit sandpaper an emery board or something similar.

4. e6000 adhesive: This is an industrial strength craft adhesive that’s very strong, flexible, waterproof and clear in colour. It should be used in a well ventilated area with a mask for protection from the harmful fumes. View e6000 glue

5. Piece of cotton cloth / hanky: Cotton is ideal because it doesn’t leave fibers behind when you wipe a surface.

6. Orange stick: Small wooden stick used for pushing back cuticles.

7. Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or Surgical Spirit (without Oil): Used for degreasing a surface by removing any traces of oil and grease and dries very quickly.

8. Havaianas or other flip flops: To add the crystals to.

9. Pair of socks in a plastic bag: I use the bags we send the crystals out in to protect the socks.

Update 29/09/12 Problems with E6000

SOME CUSTOMERS HAVE ALSO FOUND THAT GEMTAC GOES SOFT But it’s the best solution at present for personal use but NOT recommended for use if you are selling the Havaianas as there is a good chance the glue will go soft.

The problem is outlined at the bottom of this post

Preparation:

1. Place the Swarovski crystals on a clean dry surface faceted (shiny) face up. For the sake of this tutorial size 6/7 Havaianas flip-flops takes 291 x ss16 crystals per flip-flop.

Havaianas raised logo

2. The crystals can either be added leaving a gap to show the “Havaianas” logo on the strap or the logo can be removed to completely cover the strap in crystals. The easiest way to do this is with something like a Dremel tool or something similar.

Havaianas logo Removal

3. For the purpose of this tutorial I used a scalpel to remove the logo. Place the padding (socks in bag) to puff out the strap and with a gentle sawing motion remove the logo, being careful to keep your fingers out of the way. DON’T try and push the scalpel through the logo with force as it may result in you damaging the flip-flops or worse you cutting your fingers just take your time and it comes off easy with a sawing motion with very little force applied. You can use sand paper to remove the logo if you don’t have a Dremel or scalpel it’s also a lot safer.

Prepare Havaianas

4. Give the strap surface a good rub with the sand paper / emery board to roughen it up. Once the surface has been prepared it will provide a much better platform for the adhesive to bond with.

5. i. Wipe any rubbery powder from the flip-flops.
ii. With a Clean dust free part of the cotton cloth clean the surface of the strap with some alcohol to remove any grease, oil or dust. Because the fluid is alcohol it will dry very quickly and leave no residue.

Prepared Havaianas

6. Pad the straps out with the sock/bag or something similar which keeps the strap from buckling when you start adding adhesive and crystals.

Crystals faceted face up

7. Place the Swarovski crystals on a surface faceted (shiny) face up. For the sake of this tutorial size 6/7 Havaianas flip-flops takes 291 x ss16 crystals per flip-flop.

Adding the Crystals

Havaianas add e-6000

1. Using the opposite end of the jewel setter apply enough adhesive to add the first 10 rhinestones from the strap. If you add too much adhesive it will dry before the crystals are added, so it’s better to add the adhesive in stages, especially if it’s your first time crystallizing flip-flops.

Havaianas spread e6000

2. Spread the adhesive using the pointed end of the jewel setter.

Havaianas add crystal

3. Gently touch the top of a rhinestone with the wax bud of the jewel setter to pick up a crystal (don’t press too hard or the crystal will get embedded in the wax). With the crystal selected place it on the bottom centre point of the prepared / glued surface (again don’t press too hard)

Havaianas first 4 crystal

4. Continue adding the first 4 crystals in a straight line as can be seen above.

Havaianas first 10 crystal

5. Next add the remaining 6 crystals in the order shown above to form the template for the crystal rows.

Crystallize flip flops

6. Continue adding crystals one row or 4 crystals at a time.

Crystallized flip flops

7. Follow the strap along adding row after row of crystals.

Crystallize flip flops one side

8. The final row of crystals from the first half of the strap.

Crystallized flip flops half complete

9. One half of the strap complete : )

Crystallize flip flops second side

10. When starting the second half of the strap follow a mirror of step 5. Where the first 4 crystals are already present you just need to add the remaining 6 to create the template/pattern for the remaining rows. As you can see from the picture above try and keep the crystals in neat rows as the finished result will look more pleasing.

11. Continue adding the crystal rows.

Crystallized flip flops strap

12. The final 2 rows of crystals for the outer side of the strap as seen above took a row of 3 crystals and then a row of 2 crystals as the strap become narrower.

Alternative Ideas

Crystals block pattern

1. Alternative pattern using ss20 crystals in alternating blocks of colour.

Crystals stripe pattern

2. Another alternative showing ss20 above is to change the colour of each row or just alternate row colours for a stripe effect (using complementary colours).

3. With ss20 (5mm) crystals there is enough room on the strap for rows of 3 crystals side by side as seen above, ss16 (4mm) there is just enough room for 4 crystals per row. You can also use ss14 (3.5) crystals which will allow you a very fine clearance each side of the crystals rows (less likely to get knocked off).

Hope you find the tutorial useful if you do use it please let us know how you get on and how many/size crystals you use so that I can form a chart advising how many crystals are required for each flip-flop size.

  1. That looks really amazing. I must say I was really impressed with the way they turned out.

That wax ball does look a little big for accurate placement as it seems that once you picked up the crystal it would completely hide it.

    • Hi Sire
Its surprising how easy it is to use the jewel setter (stick with the wax ball) as long as you don’t press too hard its just a case of pick the crystal up and place it straight into position as the ss16 (4mm) crystals used are really easy to work with. Anything smaller than ss9 which is 2.6mm the wax bud does swallow the crystal up and its easier to use an orange stick with a we tip.

  2. You’re the expert so I’m not going to argue with you 😉

  3. Great tutorial thanks just completed a pair of gold flip flops using Golden Shadow crystals, tried before but couldn’t get the middle bit right, but its easy once you know how 😉

  4. Can you let me know how many crystals I will need for size 6/7 havaianas using ss20 crystal size please? Even an estimate would be useful, thanks!

    • Hi Nish
Have put the crystals into a template and my estimate is that it will take approximately 63 crystals per flip flop. Sent the picture to you so that you have an idea how they have been laid out.
      Hope this helps.

  5. Thank you 🙂

  6. I second Nish’s request 🙂 This is SUCH a helpful tutorial, i love it!

  7. I would also like to ask( re Nish third request! lol ) if you would
be so kind as to send me the picture
    lay out of the SS20.
Just started trying these out for my daughters, love your easy to follow
tips and pictures for us novices!!!

  8. does anyone know a good website where can i purchase these crystals in bulk? i would love to make a pair:)

  9. Hi, can you kindly share the table showing the number of crystals needed for different sized flip flops and using different sized crystals ?
    Thanks

    • Hi Zoe we don’t have a table at present but as If we can get feedback from anyone using the tutorial on how many crystals they use and what size I will happily put up a table.

  10. Hi,
The website provided to order the non hot fix crystals, will they ship to the US?

  11. Hi, this looks great ! Please can you send the SS20 template for the flip flops to my e-mail address. Would love to give it a go !

  12. Wow ! Just come across this , now off to try doing a pair myself ! Having bought a pair last summer off an Internet seller I had to return them as all the crystals fell off, made to feel it was own fault (had only worn on hold for 20 mins !) and I’m intrigued to see your findings with e-6000 glue . Thinking maybe that’s what the person used (June 12)
Khaled , can you email me the plans for ss20 as well 🙂
Off to look at your crystal store !!

  13. Hi Khaled,
Would you mind sending me the template also please?
Your tutorials are fantastic! I’ve started blinging up some of my friends converse and Havaianas and earning a bit if extra cash to boost, I really enjoy doing it, and your tutorials have made it so much easier 🙂 xx

  14. Hi Khaled I have just got a HTC One X+ phone and I was wondering how many crystals would I need and what size to do the whole case please and will it be easy to do.

  15. I am wanting to crystallise a pair of court shoes for a formal, do you suggest starting with a fabric or satin shoe rather than leather and which glue would be best,I have bought the non hotfix crystals to use.
    Thanks

    • Hi Linda If you have a look at our How to crystallize shoes tutorial it should help. It wouldn’t matter whether the shoe is satin or another type of fabric but I wouldn’t opt for leather as no glue really gives a very long lasting bond, when compared with using on fabric. The main thing to consider is that you may have to hold the crystal in place until the glue gets a bite into the fabric, then the crystal will stay in place. Non hotfix crystals would be the correct ones to use and depending on the fabric we have a guide for tests I have carried out on various glues/crystals and fabric which should help Choosing the right glue for fabric.

  16. Hi. Is this done on the regular havanians or the slim ones?

  17. Hi, I bling many items such as converse, blazers, birks etc and thought with summer on its way (hopefully) I would offer Havaianas to my customers. I initially used E6000 glue as was convinced this would be perfect but had the issue where the glue did not dry and stayed quite gloopy and gems did not stick. I then came across your site which was amazing, and I started again this time with the Gem Tac glue. I have followed the instructions to a tee, BUT my gems are still not sticking even after prep with sand paper and surgical spirit. What could I be doing wrong as this morning the gem tac is still a little sticky and the gems can be moved. I could not possible sell the flip flops like this…….Any suggestions? Thanks

    • Hi Kelly
There is really no Glue that is 100% satisfactory on the Havaianas at the moment the best of the bunch was gemtac that I tested. As the weather gets warmer I will try some other glues to see if there are any better as I have been told evo stick serious glue works but I haven’t tested it yet.

  18. Hi how many crystals and what size for a uk size 7/8 ?
    thanks

  19. Hi i am going to crystallise a hairbrush what size crystals do you think i will need and how many?
    thanks

    • Hi Ab it will very much depend on the size of the brush and the effect you are trying to achieve as to crystal size and quantity. Will be finishing a tutorial for crystallizing a car Key tomorrow or Monday and it will give you an idea about how to work out the number of crystals and size to choose.

  20. Could you tell me how many beads 16ss for a US size 7,8 and 9 Flip flops.
I love your website and wish you would ship to the States.

    Thank You

    • Hi Lesa Can you measure the length and width of the strap from the toe point to the end and I will be able to give you an idea of how many crystals you need. ss20 may be a better fit using 3 rows, which fills up the strap nicely.

  21. Hi there, ur site is great, please can u send me the template for the 5mm in a size 5 and size 6, thank u xx

    • Hi Louise For the size 5 and 6 its just an extra row or 2, will be doing a tutorial using the ss20 soon along with testing some new adhesives and just sent you the template.

  22. Hi, someone has asked me to crystal some baby havaianas approx a size 4. What size crystals would you recommend I use? And would u approx know how many I would need? Thanks Shelley

    • Hi Shelley
If you can measure the width of the strap and the length from the centre/toe to the end of the strap (which is half the strap or one side) I can give you an idea of which crystals will fit best and how many you will need.

  23. Hi can you send me a template please? And any photo of ss20 on havaianas thank you

    • Hi Jade I will be doing another tutorial soon with the ss20 as I have some new adhesive to test but will email the template over to you now.

  24. Hi
I have put my crystals on my Havanas but I noticed that some rows arnt straight so I’d like to take them all off and start again but they seem to be harder than expected as they are really stuck
Do you have any tips best way to remove them
I either used e6000 or gem tax I can’t rem but I’m struggling to get them off its taking ages
    Please help
    Thanks

  25. Hi khalid,
How many crystals were used for this tutorial as I’m going to be doing the exact ones fr a friend,
    Many thanks
    Rachel

    • Hi Rachael I would have a look at using ss20 crystals you only need 3 rows of crystals where you don’t need to be exact in your placing of crystals as you do with the ss16 or they will go over the edge of the strap and easily come off.

  26. Shelley Beaumont

    Hi Khaled

An news on the new glue? Want to make abatch up for a wedding but waiting to see if you have a better alternative to gem tac.

  27. Please could you send me a template and how many ss20 crystals I would need for slim havianas size 7 adults. Many thanks

    • Hi Kirsty
I dont have a template for slim havaianas, but if you can measure the width and length of the strap I can advise.

  28. Hi what size crystals do you recommend to use on havaianas slim? With the skinnier strap? X

  29. Hi,

I’d like to customise havaianas in different sizes, do you have a chart of how many crystals (ss16) each flip flop will take? Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Jeni
We don’t sorry, but its only a small difference in the number of crystals as you go up in sizes. You can measure them in a store if you need to know and divide the length of the strap in mm by 4mm or 0.4cm (size of the ss16).

  30. Hi Khaled

want to crystalize my Slim havaianas … the thong = 10mm in width

what size crystals should i use? i either want 2 or 3 rows of crystals on each flip flop

    please help!?

    Thanks!!

    • Hi Daniella
They wont stay on for very long at present because of the adhesive problem, but if you want to go ahead anyway measure the width of the strap and divide by 3 then you have your crystal sizes to use (make sure its just under to give yourself some room either side of the crystals so they don’t overlap the strap.

  31. Hi, Could you please send me the template.

  32. Is the glue problem the same with all flip flops or just the haviannas??

    • Hi Joleen
I dont think its the same with all flip flops because its only the last few years that it hasn’t worked on the Havaianas before this it worked fine.

  33. Another question was I have some plastic sandles I want to do…..I have seen someone do them. It looks as though there is a glitter base, then the crystals are added……what would be the best glue for the glitter?? After doing some utube watching people are using mod podge, is this strong enough?? Will it then take e6000 onto for crystals??

    • Hi Joleen
Spoke to you on the phone regarding the question did the mod podge stick when you scratched the surface or did it still come away?

  34. This is great. I would love to try it on a pair for my 7year old daughter. She would be a size 31/32. Would it be the same 4 across the strap? Would I need to use a different size?? How many would I need?

    Thanks in advance

    • Hi Wendy
I would expect the strap to be quite a bit thinner so if you measure the width of the strap in mm and say it’s 12mm (example width) then if you want 3 rows divide by 3 12/3 = 4mm so you can therefore use 3 rows of ss16 which are 4mm or if you want a slight gap on the edge ss14 which are 3.5mm. If you intend a 4 row pattern then 12/4 = 3mm , so you could use 4 rows of ss10 which are 3mm in diameter. Hope that wasn’t too confusing there is a post on the different sizes here which may help and shows all the ss vs mm sizes.

  35. Great tutorial. Can you tell me how many crystals I would need for a pair of size 36 women’s slim havaianas flip flops please? Thanks

  36. Hi Khaled
I had some havainas done with swovrski crystals
They have now gone like dirty grey colour under the crystals and the crystals are all coming off
How would get rid of the grey glue as looks awful
    Thanks
    Carol

    • Hi Carol What adhesive did they use to crystallize the Havaianas? If it was e6000 you can use nail varnish remover to take all the crystals off clean the glue off them and the strap and glue them back on again. Takes a bit of time but all the glue will come off and the crystals will be as good as new providing they are Swarovski, Preciosa or something similar where as acrylic crystals may come away discoloured/ cloudy or with damaged foil backing.

  37. Hi Khalid,

Could you give me some advice as to which glue to use on a pair of havianas I just purchased. They are plain so I wanted to add a brooch in the center. the brooch is kinda big and its metal so Im trying to figure out a glue that will make it stay in place. thanks alot!

    • Hi Lilly
I haven’t unfortunately found any adhesive that doesn’t go soft or damage the rubber, the only adhesive that did work was the GemMii but you have to be very careful as the fumes ruin the crystals it will also split the rubber if glue covers an area that flexes so has to be used as spot application only. I did a similar thing for my sister trying to glue a big broach to a pair of high heels and found that the area at the back of the broach didn’t provide a good surface for bonding to no matter how I tried it (it was hollow). In the end I built up two layer of adhesive on the back of the broach (one layer let it dry and then added another layer) making the surface at the back of the broach flat so that it provided a good bonding surface. I used e6000 for this and the broach is still stuck to each shoe today. E6000 would work for a short period on Havaianas but it will go soft once the chemicals from the rubber bleed into it unfortunately. There are a number of people in the US who have said that they have had a special glue made up for them but unfortunately if it’s true they don’t seem to want to pass on the information and after contacting numerous companies in the UK, US and Europe have has no luck in finding a solution apologies. If one does come along I will certainly be happy to pass on the information.

  38. Christina Lee Montoya

I’m finding that the gem tac we feel secure. I let them sit for a week and picked the flipflops up to move them a 3 Rhine stones have already fallen off. I can’t think of what I am doing wrong, but it isn’t right.

    • Hi Christina
There isn’t any adhesive that currently holds the crystals onto Havaianas without the glue going soft and the crystals coming off. The best I’ve found id the gemtac but that also goes soft within a few days to weeks depending on the preparation of the flip flops and heat, sun etc. What brand are the flipflops you are crystallizing?

  39. this tutorial has been extremely helpful!! Thank you!!

  40. Petrina Reutgen

    Hello,

This was extremely helpful! Thank you so much for all the great advise and expertise. 🙂

  41. Hi.
I’d like to congratulate you on your work and this site it’s extremely informative. Thank you.

My question is IV just purchased some infant size 9 patent puma basket heart and I’d like to do the side curve stripes in crystals. What sizes do you recommend please? IV already got some crystals but they are quite small .1.2 mm 1.8 and I think 2 will they be two small should I buy some bigger ones.
Thank you in advance for your advice.
    Regards
    Cat

    • Hi Cat I would maybe suggest a combination of ss12 (3.2mm) and ss16 (4mm) as you will need at least 2 sizes to be able to fill in the stripe. You can measure the width of the narrowest part of the stripe to determine if a combination of these crystals sizes will provide a good fit and if not exactly go up or down one crystal size accordingly.

  42. Hi there,
I am going to give this a try as I have always wanted to but was nervous. I love your detailed instructions. What size and how many crystals for Havianna’s like yours but size 9/10. I like the clear crystals. Thanks so much!

    • Hi Lynne I would be cautious about crystallizing Havaianas with e6000 as the glue will go soft after a few days and the crystals will come off. We have tested a number of adhesives on another post and although some worked none were 100% satisfactory. As regards the number of crystals it would only be 10/30 more or less crystals at most to go up or down a couple of sizes.
