Venetian glass beads are handmade on the Island of Murano in Italy. Venetian beads are very distinctive colorful, elegant beads that date back to the 13th Century where Master glassmakers perfected the technique of combining glass with precious metals. Venetian beads are formed in the centuries old tradition known as lampwork, the technique of hand fusing molten glass into colorful beads. To create the beads a colored glass rod is wrapped around a copper wire then gift wrapped around a square of silver, gold or other precious metal foil to form the desired shape (not all Venetian beads are wrapped in foil). Once the beads shape has been formed it is left to naturally cool in ashes for 24 hours then dipped into acid to dissolve the copper wire. The end results are extraordinary glass beads that are world famous for their beauty and clarity! Please note Venetian beads are hand made which means that no two beads are the same, therefore beads may vary slightly in size, have irregular holes on both ends and may have sharp edges that need carefully removing.
